A few days ago, I had a chance to watch a great band in my home town that I’ve been wanting to see for years. We’re talking about the indie band Pinback from San Diego, CA! I was pretty into this band around 2004 or so… Autumn of the Seraphs, Blue Screen Life, Offcell and their self titled album Pinback were in heavy play over the last few years for me. Last year they released Information Retrieved which is great as well!
To me Pinback has a very signature sound. Very melodic vocals from bassist Zach Smith (Armistead Burwell Smith IV) and guitarist Rob Crow. Also, Zach’s style of playing bass is very interesting. Very rhythmic and melodic – not the standard style of single not bass lines you general expect. There are elements of King Crimson-esque bass rhythms.
I love it when bands like this visit my town here in Missoula, because that means an intimate venue! Nothing like seeing great bands up close. We were able to get some shots of the pedalboards, and for today’s post we’ll focus on Zach Smith. His bass tone is fantastic!
Here is a break down of pedals on the board:
Strymon Flint Tremolo/Reverb
Strymon Ola Chorus/Vibrato
Electro-Harmonix Micro POG
TC Electronic PolyTune Mini
MXR Script 90 Phaser (after market LED)
Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive
Strymon Brigadier Delay (w/unknown tap tempo)
Demeter Amplification Opto Compulator
Xotic EP Booster
One Control Chamaeleo Tail Loop

Pinback is awesome. Is Jay’s Upstairs still around in Missoula? Played there in 1997.

Any idea what envelope filter he uses? It provides a really light touch and is really transparent
