Over the years, I’ve owned and played a few delay pedals in my time. I often get irritated or bored with certain delays, and get on the hunt again for a different/new one, etc. I can’t ever pinpoint what it is that irritates me the most, or what I’m actually looking for. I think one factor is simplicity. I’m not a big fan of overly complicated delays. I want something simple and easy to tweak and not worry about losing a preset, etc. As far as sounds I definitely like to have both a digital ‘clean’ sound AND also a delay that is in the analog ‘dark’ category as well. Usually, I end up with two different delays on my board.
I’ve had the Boss DD-3 delay for years, but for some reason, I’m always looking for an excuse to get it off my board. Not sure why, and time and time again, the pedal finds it’s way back. Recently, though, I was able to retire it.. but with a Boss DD-7 Digital Delay. Frankly, for the the digital clean delay, I’ve had a hard time to find something better and easier to use. I went with the DD-7 because of the tap tempo input (that is not available on the DD-3). This delay is super clean, super easy and just works excellent. For the analog tones – I’m still in rotation of various pedals, eventually I’ll stick with something, but the digital delay seems to be set now.

This morning, I came across a good deal on the Boss DD-7 Digital Delay. The Boss DD-7 lists for $280.50, and is usually available for $170, but is currently available for only $149.00 at Amazon.com. $20 off the going rate.. not too shabby. If you’re looking for a precision digital delay, this is a good choice.
