Today’s pedal line is from Josh Baez. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedalline@nulleffectsbay.com. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.
Hi, this is my pedalboard in hopes of making it into Pedal Line Friday. I play solo and with an 8-person band, This Is Your Captain Speaking- indie rock, alternative, ambient stuff is where we shine. For my solo work I play music that’s perfect for a rainy day (it’s kind of the only music there is if you live in Seattle!) Apparently both myself and my band sounds like indie rock groups such as Death Cab for Cutie, Broken Social Scene, and Arcade Fire…
Now time for the real stars of the show…I start out with a Fender Telecaster, then, using a Mogami cable, I run into my Boss TU-2 Tuner. Going down the line I hit the good ole’ Zvex Vexter Series Box of Rock, perfect for those Marshally sounds at a lower volume. Then I go into the Fulltone GT-500 for it’s tweakable boost/overdrive and, if I really want things to get dirty, I’ll turn on the distortion side to blow up my house. I then go to my MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay which I use for light delay/slapback for solos; next is the Boss DD-5 Digital Delay for reverse/dotted delay times. Then I’ll put my signal through the Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb to make my sound fuller using the room or hall reverb settings, or I’ll use the modulation setting to play ambient progressions/lead lines. After all is said and done I go into the Line 6 DL4 Delay Modular which I mainly use as a looper for soundscape/ambient stuff.
I connect all my pedals (with the exception of a cheap-o cable from Tuner to BOR, and a Planet Waves cable from RV-5 to DL4) using Hosa Pancake Cables, which have a bad reputation, but to me they’re brilliant and perfect if you want to have more space!
To power it all I use a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+, allowing me to power the MXR Carbon Copy with 12v and my GT-55 using 18v.
I am using a homemade pedalboard and Velcro strips to put it all together; I also use electric tape to make sure my settings stay in the right place.
I am playing all this through a Marshall Class 5 amplifier.
