Last month I talked about the upcoming Electro-Harmonix OpAmp reissue that inspired the tunes on Billy Corgan’s Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream album. That super thick and textured guitar tone is super signature and associated as the ‘pumpkins’ sound. Behind that sound there are a few pieces, but on piece is a special Big Muff – the Op Amp version.
If you know anything about Big Muffs, you know there are a ton of variations. Just to mention a few – Triangle Muff, Rams Head Muff, NYC Muff, Russian Muff, etc. Within these muffs, it’s about the guts. Small variations to components or circuit design provide their signature tone. The version that is often overlooked is the Op Amp version. This is the muff you want for the Pumpkins tone.
So Electro-Harmonix is planning on releasing the Op Amp version and here is Billy Corgan talking about it.
