Types of Pedals – Infographic by Reverb

I’ve found myself in this conversation so many times with other guitar players that are just getting to pedals. When a guitarist is just wanting to explore the world of effects, it’s hard to digest the massive amount of pedals on the market. My suggestion is to always to break them down into groups first. The groups, or maybe I should say category, will help you determine the primary sounds you want. Categories would include – delay, modulation, filters and drives just to name the big groups. From here you can see what you want to focus on. Each of these categories have sub-categories, for example, delays could be broken down into reverbs, analog delay, digital delay, etc.

If you’re overwhelmed, this is a great way to digest what’s out there, then focus on what effects are right from you. Going past the sub-categories, you would then look at the pedals that fit that category. Your decision would be based on features, cost and ratings. If you wanted a website to help you with this?
