A couple of weeks ago, MXR published a video featuring Billie Joe Armstrong’s signature drive pedal – The Dookie Drive. This pedal is to help replicate the tones of the iconic Dookie album by Green Day and apparently, you can also dial in some American Idiot tones too. So far the reaction from the socials (primarily a variety of gear groups on Facebook) hasn’t been that good. What are your thoughts?
Check out the video below:
If you’re digging this pedal, it’s available on Amazon for only $187. Let me know what you think by commenting below!

I’m not meaning to hate on it, but Armstrong has a fairly generic “rock” tone. I mean, he might play totally uniquely, or write great songs, or not- but the actual sound of his guitar is nothing I haven’t heard all over the place before and since. So, I reckon the only reason to do a signature drive pedal would be to cash in on celebrity. Again, I’m not hating that, and let everyone make a buck if they can, but I suspect resenting that is at the heart of any hatred for the pedal.

I agree with Matt. Someone who is going to buy this pedal is going to be attracted by the album artwork and nostalgia factor. They aren’t getting it because they have spent the last 25 years of their life unsuccessfully trying to dial in Billie Joe’s sound from this period or any other. It is a straightforward tone that hasn’t really changed. That’s not a bad thing it just doesn’t necessitate an additional $187 pedal.

A Dookie drive pedal presupposes something desirable over, say, The Ramones or Pistols, groups Billie Joe & Co. shamelessly aped. Does it have a knob for “originality I think the “Generic†chip took its place. To quote Johnny Rotten, “I hate Green Day!†And yes, he did say that.
