Man.. when I think of The Breeders, I think of the early 90s. What a great, great time for music. It was a time when anything weird was possible. There was a great acceptance and exploration of various genres. People would just lump it in as ‘alternative’. No math-rock. No post-rock. No post-punk. If it was weird and didn’t fit mainstream radio – it was ‘alternative’.
The Breeders had something special from those days. Kim Deal from the Pixies always caught my ear and at that same time I was super into the Throwing Muses – who had Tanya Donelly. Kim and Tanya formed The Breeders and my musical world exploded.
The band has had many line up changes, and took extended breaks, etc. But man, when I hear a Breeders tune, I immediately lock in. I’m really bummed that I couldn’t catch a show on their recent tour, but was super excited to see a Premier Guitar rig rundown featuring Kelley Deal (Kim’s twin sister) and bassist Josephine Wiggs. Check it out…
I was always curious about how they pull off the super wet/rich vox stuff, and it was great to see that Kelley has a separate board for vocals.
