I’ve mentioned in the past – one of the biggest genres that have influenced me in multiple ways was the British post-punk / goth movement in the early and mid 80s. By the time I was leaving high school in the late 80s, many of those bands have disbanded or ended completely. It was exciting to to follow the morphs and learning about their previous bands. For example, I knew about New Order before hearing any Joy Division. I knew about Love and Rockets before listening to any Bauhaus, etc. I loved going deeper into the history and understanding the progression.
One of those transition bands, that I was absolutely obsessed with, that very few people seem to know about, was the band Tones on Tail. This was a band that excited between Bauhaus and Love and Rockets.. and are amazing. Both Love and Rockets and Bauhaus have reformed and toured again, but Tones has never reformed in any way… until now.
POPTONE is Tones on Tail featuring Daniel Ash on guitars/vox, Kevin Haskins on drums and Diva Dompe (who is Kevin’s daughter and replacing original member Glen Campling) on bass. This tour is going to be one of my ‘regret’ tours. They are not playing close to me… and I can’t make traveling work. Years from now.. I WILL regret not seeing them.
Recently, on their Instagram, there was a photo of Daniel Ash setting up and you get to see his modest (but highly effective) pedal board set up. Check it out:

Daniel Ash is one of my all time favorite guitarists. I love how modest his pedal board is. Looks like he’s still using fender’s. I think my favorite “catchy” songs from tones on tail would be performance. No one knows how to handle feedback better than Daniel!!

I’m guessing his effects order is dictated by which pedals he needs to hit while singing, which would be why the fuzz and chorus are all the way left as opposed to a conventional chain. If you read interviews with him he is way more concerned with motorcycles than the ‘rules’ of playing guitar. That’s how you get unique sounds that are still epic 30 years on. I’m also pretty sure he plays a Fernandes tele shape with a sustained pickup to replace the ebow that is a key element of his sound. Love and rockets are one of my favorite bands, saw them live a decade ago in a club warming up for Coachella, blew my mind. Can’t wait to see Poptone in a couple weeks. Daniel Ash rules, all time under rated guitar player
