Pedal Line Friday – 8/19 – Derek Green

Today’s Pedal Line Friday submission is from Derek Green. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedalline@nulleffectsbay.com. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.

Pedal Line Friday - 8/19 - Derek Green

Hi I’m Derek and this is my spaceship, I play guitar in Jigsaw Eyesore we’re based in Southampton UK.
Please give us a like on Facebook

My rig changes every few months but this setup should last me for a while.
I guess I’ll briefly mention guitars and amps. My number one guitar is a Rickenbacker 360, it’s been my dream guitar for as long as I can remember I play with the pickup selector in the centre position. I also play a Squire VM Jazzmaster which is slowly being upgraded from stock and an Ibanez Talman as its backup, I only use the neck pickups on those.

In terms of amps, I’m a transistor guy, I’ve never really liked tube amps for pedals. I recently upgraded form a mid 70’s FAL Kestrel to a late 70’s Roland Jazz Chorus 160, the chorus sound of it is to die for!

OK now for the lengthy part, my board, which was built but my dad.

Boss TU-2

EHX Holier Grail – I use the Grail in hall mode with a nice amount of effect, I love the sound of reverb into distortion, it sounds like an explosion.

EHX Superego (Line 6 Space Chorus in loop) – The Space Chorus is set as a really slow vibrato in the loop of the Superego to add more life to the synth sounds it provides, the Superego is set in auto mode

Alexander Radical Delay – I have this set quite fast with a healthy amount of repeats and a little of the modulation on to take the digital edge off.

Digitech Whammy DT – basically just use the octave up and octave harmony settings, I use the rest of the functions when playing alone.

Dr Scientist BitQuest! – I love the flanger on this set quite fast. I also use the bit crusher and the delay is awesome too!

Montreal Assembly Count to 5 – I use mode 1 which sounds magical, check it out on YouTube for an actual explanation as it’s crazy.

Boss NS-2 (Send)

DOD Gonkulator Modulator – This is basically a Grunge pedal with a ring mod at a fixed point, it sounds disgusting, so I love it!

Guyatone Distortion Chorus – Distortion and Chorus at the same time all there is to know really.

MXR Dyna Comp – I only use this with low octaves from the whammy to beef it up when emulating bass and with the Fuzz Factory to make it even fizzier

Zvex Fuzz Factory – It sounds like Velcro, sounds cool with the octave up from the whammy.

Visual Sound Route 66 – I run the comp side all the time, it boosts the signal through and gives me some high frequencies back, I use the drive as my basic lighter drive sound.

DOD Ice Box – I can get a nice detuned chorus out of this, it’s rarely used now though due to the Jazz Chorus’ built in effect.

Behringer Vibrato – Juan Alderete says it’s close in sound to an original Boss VB-2 and that’s good enough for me, when it dies eventually I’ll pick up one of the Waza Craft ones.

Multivox Bi-Phase – weird old phaser, I use it on a slow speed medium depth setting. The switch is cool, it’s like a rubber soft touch button

Boss NS2 (return)

Red Panda Particle – crazy delay, I use the dens delay setting, the reverse is really nice too!

EHX #1 Echo – I have the feedback and time on max and use it as a sampler, once you’ve looped something up if you mess with the time knob you get a cool glitch that’ll cycle around with the loop as it’s constantly recording but never self oscillates.

Boss FV-500h

Earthquakes Devices Organizer – I used to use a Behringer FX-600 a la Nick Reinhart set in the octave setting, the circuit can’t handle it so it lags and is just off of the octave which is cool. The Organizer does all that on purpose and has control over all the parameters.

Boss DD-5 – stutter sounds!!!

Mid-fi Electronics Clari(not) – this is the one without the built in fuzz, sounds like a busted tape machine, the pitch of the delay gets all messed up it’s so cool.

EHX Pitch Fork – nice for the 5th above and below and the blend at half way, tracks really nicely too.

EHX Analogizer – Another gain stage, stacks nicely with the Route 66 and has a very slight delay built in kind of like a doubletracker.

Dr J Shadow Echo – nice analog slapback, also self oscillates nicely and has built in modulation which can get out of hand.

Strymon El Capistan (Bright Onion Fav Switch) – perfect multi head tape emulation seriously love this thing.

Line 6 DL-4 – I have ping pong, reverse and the auto volume as my presets. I use the looper mostly though as re-triggering, double speed and reverse are awesome.

TC Electronic Hall Of Fame – just using a big hall setting, I’m not totally in love with it though may be next to be replaced.

Boss RC-3 (Bright Onion Contoller) – I use the RC-3 as a master looper so if I’ve got a couple of loops going on the DL-4, DD-5 and #1 Echo I can bounce it all down to the RC-3 and save it.

EHX Flanger Hoax – this is new to me, basically just using it to mess with recorded loops at the moment.

Thanks for the interest, Derek, Jigsaw Eyesore.

Yeah! I like this pedalboard, the colors, the signal chain, the liberal use of weirdo effects, it is big and cramped and beat up and used, the boutique effects nuzzled in with a Behringer, EHX everywhere, perfect. It’s like the Millennium Falcon of pedalboards.

Another case of edge-itis- too many effects with cheap and nasty patch cables sucking the tone out of your signal. How long does it take to get ready for a song? You’ve got 30 effects there- assuming 6″ patch cables, that’s an extra 15 feet of low-quality cable sucking your tone like a drunk groupie. Cut back on the number of fx, learn how to use them, and get decent quality patch cable. Your tone will love you for it.
