I’ve never been a fan of clip tuners. They always seem cheap (can often get them for free), and for me, in-effective in a band situation. But, when I saw the announcement for the TC Electronic PolyTune Clip a while back, I have to admit, I had to take a look.
When TC Electronic came out with the PolyTune, it pretty much changed the way musicians looked at tuners and what they’re capable of. Why wouldn’t that be the case here? Here we have a well built, and well functioning tuner that clips on the headstock.. that allows for different angles and positions WHILE maintaining the excellent polytune capabilities.
What I think is interesting, is that I’ve been having multiple conversations with various guitarists that are starting to use these tuners. Why? It’s something I didn’t consider, but do now. Pedalboard space. I never considered.. getting the tuner off of the board so I can put something fun there. As pedal nerds, finding real estate on the board is a constant challenge. You could either buy a bigger board, buy slimmer pedals, or finally, getting rid of a pedal or two. My gears are turning thinking about this. If I was to go in this direction, this clip tuner would be the only choice.

This video also has some good info as well:
As you can see – small, light, bright, accurate, sturdy, easy. All the things you’d want from tuner.. and especially from a clip on type tuner.
Let’s talk about price. This might be the tipping point. List price for the TC Electronic PolyTune Clip is only $75, which my opinion is not bad for this unit at all.. but is available via Amazon for only $49.99 and includes FREE shipping! Yes!

Having a Polytune for a couple years now, the strum tuning thing is absolutely worthless to me. I was all about it at first, but it has had no function in my gigging life; I revert to single note tuning.

For jazz gigs where i havent traditionally had a pedalboard, i have used a Snark, to great success. But though it does make sense to clear some board space for some folks, I like having a buffered pedal first in my chain, and the ability to mute with my feet. -

I like this tuner. A buddy of mine has one and I’ve borrowed it a couple of times. My only concern is that I tend to lose these things and I don’t want blow $50/$75 on one and have it end up in the universe with all the unmatched socks. If I can find a way to not lose it, I’m buying one. Until then, my TC poly mini on my board still has a job.

It doesn't work well as a polytune on my Strats, only as note-by-note. Disappointed. Probably good on an acoustic.
