When I saw “How to sound like Queens of the Stone Age (Josh Homme) on guitar” come through my news feed yesterday, I have to admit, I rolled my eyes a little. Josh Homme has a very unique style, tone and technique, that in my opinion is very hard to replicate. Tone from hands and style and gear owned can be hard to replicate. Honestly, I thought this would be a disaster of a video, but after watching, it was super impressed.
Livingroom Gear Demos did a great job capturing the tones, as well as his playing – top shelf. I would highly recommend that you subscribe to this channel. Check out the video below:
The pedals he used for this video were:
Bigfoot Engineering Octo Puss
VFE Pedals Focus
Pedal Projects Klone
Digitech Obscura
Catalinbread SFT
Obviously guitar and amps were a major factor, but his selections in pedals were very interesting. Josh is pretty tight lipped about his pedals for QotSA, but one of the pedals he uses to create his signature sound is the Stone Deaf FX PDF-1 Parametric Distortion Filter. I think that is generally the hard pieces of the puzzle for people to figure out, and that is where I think the VFE Focus comes in nicely for this demonstration. Secondly, the Catalinbread SFT really nails the bite on this clip too. Overall, he did a great job!
