Since I started EffectsBay.com I became more and more interested in electronics and luthier work. It’s a natural progression from playing to tweaking to maintaining gear. I get a great feeling working on my own guitars and pedals. There are plenty easy-to-do tasks that aren’t too scary, but could yield some great results in the tone department. Since I started working on my guitars, and got more and more comfortable with them, suddenly the phone started to ring with requests for working on my friends’ guitars. I never charge for work.. since the experience is very satisfying, and the more guitars I see, the more I learn.
I’ve swapped out a few pickups throughout the years, and that is a very common request. One of my good friends was not loving his pickup set in his Joe Strummer Telecaster and I wanted to check out this biz in Boise called Porter Pickups. This was a great opportunity to do a couple of things, try out a set of Porters and to hook my buddy with some great tone. I gave Brian Porter a call and told him the situation and he had a recommendation of the set to purchase. Pickups arrived quickly and I did the swap out. My buddy LOVED the pickups and was extremely stoked. Porter Pickups for the win! For more information about this pickup swap out, I wrote a post a while back. You can read it here.
If you’re interested in changing your tone to something a little different/better, swap out those pickups. Remember, nothing is permanent. You can always roll back or continue your quest, but pickups are something to really think about.
Right now, Porter Pickups is having a great promotion that will last until 1/25. Brian contacted me to see if Rattlesnake Cables would be interested to sweeten the promotion, and I was super down with this idea. I’m a firm believer of Porter Pickups and have no problem standing with these guys. If you purchase a Porter Pickup set $200 or more you get a free 15′ Standard Rattlesnake Cable.
For full details on the promotion, go here. If you’re unsure about what set would be a good fit for your guitar/style, shoot Brian a message, he’ll help you out!
