Here in my home town we have annual fest called TotalFest. It’s an amazing event that spans a few days across multiple venues and features awesome indie bands from all over the country and world now. In 2011, I missed Gull. I had a few people tell me about this musician. Basically, solo looper/drummer/guitarist/vox project. Honestly, I sometimes assume too much. I’ve seen drummers that play guitar – and immediately think of a blues act on the street performing with a kick drum. Duh.. this is TotalFest right?
Recently on Facebook, I saw someone mention Gull, and I realized this was the act I missed in 2011, and I wanted to check it out. Um.. I am so blown away!!!! If I had a time machine.. would I go see dinosaurs in the Triassic period? Nah. I would go back a couple of years ago to watch this happen on stage in front of me.
As you can see, Nathaniel Rappole aka Gull is a mad man. Love his approach. The mask to hold the microphone. The looping and intricate hammer-on guitar technique while playing interesting and powerful drop parts. As far as effects, I see that he’s using a Line 6 DL4 for the looping capability, but unsure about the octave portion. If you know what he’s using for that, please let me know. I was unable to find any decent shots of the pedal set up.
While on my Gull exploration, I also came across an amazing documentary trailer featuring Gull. The trailer is called ‘Street Muse: Kenya Trailer’ where Gull travels to Kenya and interacts – where music is the linking connection between cultures, styles and instruments. This looks amazing as well!
