Troy Van Leeuwen of Queens of the Stone Age (QOTSA) is a fantastic guitarist is a big part of the sound scape that defines the band. Back in 2011 I did a break down of his effects, but since then, the boards have made some drastic changes. Yesterday, I saw that Primer Guitar did a rig rundown, and it was a good one. Unfortunately, Josh Homme didn’t want to participate. Bummer.
For those of you not familiar with Primer Guitar’s Rig Rundown, you need to subscribe to their channel. It’s awesome to see the artists (or their techs) talk about what they use.
I went ahead and broke down the boards. He left a lot out during the interview…
Primary Board for guitar:
Korg Pitchblack Tuner
Dunlop DVP1 Volume Pedal
Way Huge Pork Loin
Way Huge Supa-Puss
Digitech Whammy Re-Issue
Morley Power Optical Wah (vintage no-fuzz)
Voodoo Lab Ground Control
Custom Audio Electronics (CAE) Tap
Guitar Pedal Rack:
Way Huge Green Rhino
Dunlop QZ1 Cry Baby Q-Zone
HBE Germacide (Gremanium based Treble Booster)
Fuzzrocious The Demon
Way Huge Aqua-Puss
Earthquaker Devices Dispatch Master
Lap steel board:
Jim Dunlop DVP3 Volume Pedal
Jim Dunlop DVP1 Volume Pedal
Korg Pitchblack Tuner
Electro-Harmonix Super Ego
Way Huge Green Rhino
Boss RV-5 Reverb
Line 6 DL4 Delay
I was unable to identify one pedal. That pedal was in the rack left of the Q-Zone. I can see a partial name – ‘GERMAC..’ or ‘GERMAO.. ‘. Controls include hi-fi/lo-fi toggle, on/off footswitch, more footswitch, gain knob, level knob, freq. knob. If you know what this is, please let me know!
UPDATE: Missing pedal is the HBE Germacide
Also, it was super cool to see early version of Pedal Labels on the pedals. They are great for marking settings! If you’re interested in purchasing a set for yourself, go here.

In the interview Troy said the pedal next to the Q-Zone in the rack is another Way Huge Green Rhino like on the lapsteel board. 🙂

The weird pedal is made by Homebrew Electronics, It’s called Germacide.
“Pedal is very rare and has been out of production for years. It’s a germanium treble/multi frequency booster with the same settings available as the Germania but is way more tweakable with the option of being able to boost specific frequencies.”
