Thunder Road Guitars Review: Earthquaker Devices Disaster Transport Senior

Arguably one of the coolest new delay units on the market, the Disaster Transport Senior from the the fine folks at Earthquaker Devices is quite a force to be reckoned with. Released earlier this year the Disaster Transport Senior was designed as a straight delay, straight reverb, rhythmic delay, modulated delay, and old school tape style echo and I believe it accomplishes all of these effects quite delightfully. At a first glance it appears as though it might be a tad tricky to learn how to use, however I can assure you after spending some time with the DTS it is indeed quite easy to use and a fantastic pedal.

With some downtime in the shop I thought I would strap on a 1961 Fender Jazzmaster and plug into a 1966 Fender Super Reverb and see what this unit is all about. The very first thing I noticed is how wonderfully the two delays interact with each other and are able to compliment each other without sounding mushy or like a giant mess. The modulation feature in delay A is really cool and is remnant off old tape echoes. Depending on where your depth level is at on delay A you can really pull the repeats out of tune which can add an eerie layer to your overall tone. My favorite setting using delay independently was Time at noon, repeats at 2 o’clock, depth at 10 o’clock, rateat 2 o’clock, and bleed at 12 o’clock.

Using delay B my initial reaction is how much more rhythmic it can be and with the right tweak it can allow for some serious U2 action without much change in the settings. To achieve this sound I had the mix at 1 o’clock, repeats at 2 o’clock, and time at 2 o’clock. Using the exact same settings and using both delay A and B simultaneously also allowed for some cool, tune bending ambient action.

All in all I was very impressed with the Disaster Transport Senior and believe Earthquaker Devices has yet again come up with a really unique pedal. At a price-point that doesn’t break the bank, this unit would be a fantastic addition to any shoegazer’s pedal board.
