Today’s pedal line is from Jumahat. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedalline@nulleffectsbay.com. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.
Hi! Great site you have here. I’ve been following you for a month now. Lots of good stuff, reviews and tips i got from this site. Always something new to feast my eyes, and work by brain on..
I’m Jumahat from Singapore. I’m a huge fan of music and i appreciate music across all styles. And i really mean ALL styles. Be it rock, metal, hardcore, jazz, Marley, Hendrix, blues, glitchy electronic, drum and bass, experimental ambient, dark dub, Adele, Madonna.. you get what i mean.. But i’m really heavily into stuff with lots of delays. I guess its from discovering Gilmour/Pink Floyd and Edge/U2 at a young age – still remember tape was still around! And later years discovering dub – old and new styles and of course constant spinning to Loveless and the like.
Nowadays i’ll just plug my Jazzmaster into my Mac running Guitar Rig – i don’t own an amplifier! But sometimes i’ll throw in a pedal or two into the frontline of my Line6 USB interface to spice and overload stuff. And most times too i’ll chain ALL my pedals into the front and use the guitar rig Twin Reverb or Orange amps simulation. It works fine for me, though it’ll get too buzzy.
My effects line-up:
Pro-Co Rat 2
Mostly as moderate gain overdrive. It can really nail that John Scofield tone, though i can’t play like him at all!
Tech 21 XXL
Another gem i have! Mostly use this stacked with the Rat 2, for its fizzy-fuzz tone with the warp on max.
ZVex Box Of Metal
Use this for twidling and turning the knobs on-the-fly almost randomly to get all noise/tones sorts.Inspired by what Nels Cline did during his demo of the same pedal.
MXR Phase 90
Use this sparingly, either very slow for added depth, or very fast for watery effect. I’m still trying to figure out why there is a loud pop every time i step on the pedal. Its bothering me big time!
MXR Zakk Wylde Chorus
Just like my old Boss CE5, but much easier to get sounds i want. Use it for shimmer chorus tones. Or over the top like John Scofield, again!
Boss DD7 Digital Delay
A very reliable compact pedal with great sounds/tones. I use this when i want to dial in any delays on the fly. Usually go for the normal pristine digital delay sounds, or modulate delay. I’ll re-arrange this before the Zvex Box Of Metal once i get my Wampler Faux Tape Echo w/Tap – which is in the mail. I want to get that fuzzy/distorted delay sounds.
EHX Memory Man w/Hazarai
This is one of those great products from Electro Harmonix! All the delay sounds are crazy and the controls/knobs let you get crazy tones/sounds out this baby. Still have not fully finished playing with this! And of course the tap-tempo is ultra-essential. The looper is cool too. And i especially love the reverse delay on this!
TC Electronic Flashback X4
This is the latest addition to my efx line. I was actually looking for a Line6 DL4 but its difficult to get one where i am. So decided to get this instead when i see its got more or less the same functions i need – 3 presets and tap tempo. With the additional 4 toneprints slots, its really one up better, for me at least. I’m still getting the hang of its looper function. And the sounds/tones i get from this blue box is endless. The toneprints too give me lots more dizzying choices. A few of my friends who owns the DL4 actually were contemplating switching to this. Well, i might just buy one of those off them then!
I have these pedals too which are not in the pic: a Boss SD1 SuperOverdrive (which i’m thinking of sending to JHS for mod, along with the Boss DD7), and a Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Octave Fuzz (still trying to coax usable settings/tones out of it). A Wampler Faux Tape Echo w/Tap is on its way here too. And i’m still contemplating between a Boss RV5 (going to have the JHS dual mod) or a TC Electronics Hall Of Fame Reverb for my huge endless decay reverb needs. And i know i’m getting a Boss RC30 Loop Station pretty soon too!
Some people i know are either digital (Mac>Guitar Rig/Amplitube) recording nuts, or purely analog (stompboxes>amps) gearheads. I love both ways – i try to emulate my Guitar Rig to sound like the “real deal stompboxes and amps”, and also my efx chain-line to sound like what i’ve recorded in Guitar Rig. And i don’t get too worked-out too when its not really close.
There you have it! Thanks for reading..
