Jimmy Smith of Foals is starting to be one of my favorite guitarists. The combination of his and Yannis’ guitar interplay is a huge part of why I really like Foals. Over the last year, I’ve been playing a lot of my Fender Jazzmaster, and thought it was great seeing Jimmy using one (actually a few) for the Holy Fire tour and the videos related to their Holy Fire release.
Recently, I got to see them at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, OR (I’ll be writing more about that in the near future) but my wife was able to get a partial photo of Jimmy Smith’s pedal board and thought some of you might be interested in what’s going on there.
Here is the breakdown of pedals from this shot..
Line 6 DL4 Delay
Electro-Harmonix POG 2
Strymon Timeline
Boss RV-5 Reverb
Orange Footswitch <- not 100%
Fuzzrocious Rat Tail
Fuzzrocious Rat Tail
Boss TU-3 Tuner
All pedals are routed through a GigRig QuarterMaster 10 true bypass strip.
Jimmy uses a pair of Fuzzrocious Rat Kings for their UK/EUR tours, but Rat Tails for US/Can tours. The pedal board was a tough shot, here is the full photo taken by Amy Donovan.

Thanks for the article! Does anyone know if that is glow in the dark tape or just coloured gaffer’s tape he is using on his pedals?

Hi ! The white one is definitly not an orange footswitch. You can see it in this video at 0:44 in HD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0IKAQVVksQ.

Well after looking at it closely I don’t know, maybe it is an orange one after all.

I’ve seen them 3 times this year and noticed that a BIG part of their overall sound comes from a Strymon Blusky reverb, very expensive but amazing pedal. It creates a nice “pad”-like sound. Would love to se a review on that pedal, really really cool.
