Pedal Board Breakdown – Kim Thayil – Soundgarden

Back in the 90s, just like most of the people on the planet, I got into some Soundgarden. As an early guitarist, I was interested in Kim Thayil’s guitar/tone/tunings. I would always here about his alternative tunings, and some of the tones he would pull off were memorable. I think as a guitarist, it’s important to make memorable parts. Not necessarily leads, but something where you can put your thumb print on. Kim has an original sound and definitely leaves his mark all over the place.

I was stoked to see that they went back on tour. A few of my friends were able to see them, and was glad to hear that they’re as good as ever.

Recently, Premier Guitar did a Rig Rundown on the band, but I wanted to focus on Kim Thayil’s pedal board for this post

Here is a break down of pedals on Kim’s board. Also, looks like he’s using some pedal labels from PedalLabels.com!

This was awesome. I love Soundgarden. Kim Thayil definitely has a distinct style/sound.

I have a soft spot for Head Down. I am not sure what the effect is as it is very subtle, but the repeating single note thing that starts at 3:06 and is panned to the left, is perfect coming out of the heavy bridge.

I never realized just how many effects Thayil used until I saw this video.
