Today’s pedal line is from Jackson Floyd. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedalline@nulleffectsbay.com. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.
Hello! Long time viewer, first time email-er, or something like that. I enjoy your site very much, especially since you update it all the time–unlike some sites! I play guitar in a number of bands in San Antonio. TX. These bands vary genre-wise, so I keep a variety of things on my board to cover the different realms. It all starts with my guitars. I play a Gibson Les Paul Studio 70’s tribute, a Burns Steer, a couple of Korean strats from the early 90’s, and a National-knockoff resonator that I’ve duct-taped the pickup onto the guitar. Here’s my pedal chain:
Z Vex Machine
MXR Dyna Comp
Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi
Ernie Ball Volume Jr — tuner out to Boss TU3
Boss DS-1
TC Electronic Mojo Mojo
Keeley Katana
Boss TR-2 Tremolo
Line 6 M5, with Roland expression pedal
Electro Harmonix Cathedral
Electro Harmonix Stereo Memory Man
Malekko Ekko 616
Electro Harmonix Tube Zipper
For the most part it’s powered with a couple of 1 Spots, though the M5, Memory Man, and Tube Zipper all have their own power supplies. The surge protector’s attached to the other side of the board. As you can see, I’m a sucker for Electro Harmonix. I think they make very reliable pedals. I use a couple of old 60’s Fender amps of various sizes, so my basic tone is very clean. I like using pedals to overdrive or distort my tone, as opposed to an amps overdrive or distortion channels. I’ve used several hi-gain amps and just don’t think tonally they compare to my method. The M5 is my jack-of-all trades pedal, and it can do some especially cool things when paired with an expression pedal. I use the Memory Man as a short slap-back delay, and the Ekko as my longer, modulated delay. The Tube Zipper is at the end of the chain, which I know is peculiar, but it’s a placement I stole from Grizzly Bear’s Daniel Rossen, and I think it sounds great there! I have a couple of other things that find their way onto the board, like a
Death By Audio Total Sonic Annihilation feedback looper and a Russian Big Muff clone. If I’m playing with a number of different guitars, I’ll balance out the levels with A Boss GE-7 Equalizer. Thanks, and keep up the good work with the site! You can check out my bands here:
