My appreciation for Jack White has been an evolving journey. I remember hearing White Stripes for the first time, and it was mildly interesting at first. But like in a lot of cases, things grow on you. Pretty soon, I was really digging White Stripes, but for whatever reason, I couldn’t give it a full thumbs up (until years later). I remember that all of my friends were liking it, and maybe that was some subtle rebellion there. Who knows.
A few years later, The Raconteurs came out. A different set of friends were loving this band and by this time the White Stripes were full on mainstream (but cool-mainstream). I thought it was good, but couldn’t fully commit again. In retrospect, I think my issue was with Jack White. I just didn’t get him. I didn’t get his guitar style, I didn’t get his vocals, and I didn’t get his personality.
That’s when “It Might Get Loud” comes in. This documentary was about three guitarists talking about their roots and passion related to music and specifically with guitar. The three musicians were Jack White, The Edge and Jimmy Page. When I saw the list, I was like “why the hell is Jack White in this group?”. I was super excited to see this movie, and when I did, I remember walking out of the theatre and thinking about how Jack White blew my mind. Granted, you can’t diss Page or the Edge, but I really “got” Jack White after that movie, and had a ton of respect for him. Jack White clearly is passionate about one thing… music. Not about being a character, but person that goes “all in” on his musical ventures.
This morning I stumbled across a GREAT interview of Jack White by Sound Opinions talking about the White Stripes, thoughts on Music and his new solo album. Click the player below to listen to the interview!
I’ve had a few friends check out White’s solo tour – and all the reports have been massively good. What do you guys think of Mr. Jack White? Please comment below!!
