As I mentioned in past posts, I’ve been really interested in loopers lately. Been really searching for the right looper for me. As I mentioned, I have the Boss RC-3, been messing with the Boss RC-30 lately. Started looking at the the Boss RC-300 and getting excited about the Pigtronix Infinity Looper. While doing my research I have been running across the Boomerang III Phrase Sampler – specifically on the audio quality of the looper. I’ve always been concerned with the switches on the unit (look flimsy, but hear they’re actually good) and that I haven’t seen any really examples I can relate with.. until now.
I just stumbled across Andrew Othling’s YouTube channel, and finally there are a few things I can relate with – he plays an electric, his board has some of the same pedals as mine, and he’s playing a style of ambient music that I’m very interested in playing. Now, I can really see/hear how the Boomerang III might do for me.

His board has some great pedals, and wanted to highlight those as well. Here were the effects used in this particular piece.
Diamond Compressor
EHX Micro POG
Goodrich L-120 Volume
EHX Deluxe Memory Man w/ Tap Tempo
Strymon El Capistan
Line 6 Echo Park
Boss RV-5
Strymon blueSky
Boomerang III Looper + Sidecar
If you have some experience with various loopers including the Boomerang please let me know what you think by commenting below. Also be sure to check out Andrew’s YouTube channel for other great ambient songs!

Andy is the man. I’ve noticed he uses the Boomerang too. I just wish it wasn’t so expensive!
I have used a Boss RC-2 some and it’s okay, but it sucks tone like no other. Lately I’ve just used the SOS setting on the Boss DD-20 with another delay and reverb after it. Check it out: http://youtu.be/IdKgQwmwWOw
Karl Verkade is pretty great. Definitely check out his stuff. He has a gazillion pedals on his board, but I’ve seen him just use just a DD-7 to loop (http://youtu.be/d5zptwiEuZQ). He’s used a Boss RC20XL too (http://youtu.be/gT8_EL76Bh4).

You should check out some of Andrew Bird’s live clips,

He uses a Line 6 DL4, instead of stopping the recording to overdub he, in many cases, times his riffs to the 15 second max loop so it automatically stops recording and begins playing with out a second foot stomp. Some of the best use of loopers I’ve ever seen.
