Skull Taps for Boss RC-3 and Delays with Tap Tempo Input!

Skull Taps for Boss RC-3 and Delays with Tap Tempo Input!A little while back I was asked to make a tap tempo footswitch for a friend that was using a Boss RC-3 Loop Station. The Boss RC-3 Loop Station is a great pedal to record and play over loops, sample wav/mp3 files, etc. I personally like it for working out melody lines, work on a lead over a piece or figuring out dual guitar interplay, etc. Very useful tool!

The tap tempo control for the Boss RC-3 Loop Station has a few functions and required some trial and error to get right on my end. The tap tempo control obviously handles the click tempo in the pedal, but also is used to stop the loop and to clear the phrase. The ‘stop’ feature is really nice. For those of you that own a Boss RC-3 know it’s a pain to double tap the main footswitch to stop the loop. The tap tempo will allow a single click to stop! Depressing the tap tempo down for 2 seconds and the phrase will be cleared.

Skull Taps for Boss RC-3 and Delays with Tap Tempo Input! So, after putting this together, I thought I would have some fun with the old boring tap tempo switch. I made a batch of tap tempos with a little attitude and calling them Skull Taps. I made two versions. One is the tap tempo switch mentioned above for the Boss RC-3 Loop Station, and the other is a generic tap tempo that will work delay pedals with a tap tempo input on them. Boss DD-5, Boss DD-6 and Boss DD-7 for example would be perfect candidates for this tap.

If you’re looking for a tap tempo option for your delay and/or something for your RC-3 Loop Station, pick up one of these guys! Skull Taps use small rugged aluminum enclosure (only 1.5″ wide). Saves much more space than the Boss Tap Tempo footswitches!

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

Since there was some great demand on these tap tempo switches, I created a web site and I’m now offering different types of tap tempos. One of the new additions is the Skull Tap Double Tap with TRS Cables. These are a great controller for your Boss RC-3 or Boss RC-30 Loop Stations. Additionally, there have been questions about the normal open vs. normal close versions, so now I’m also offering tap tempos with polarity switching so you can set it to either!

Doesn’t the RC-30’s right footpad act as a tap tempo?

Isn’t there functionality for a second pedal: Moving the Phrase Memory Positions up and down?

On the RC-3 I’m not seeing that option from a input pedal/signal. That’s available (built in) on the RC-30 I believe. According to my RC-3 manual, the tap tempo input will get your tempo, on/off and clear phrase. I’ll dig around though.. that would be a cool feature. Bending over sucks.

I don’t have the use for it right now but I like this idea and the design… might acquire it for later for I assume that it’s a limited edition, but I’d like to have more technical information and to know the shipping rate to western Europe !

While I had never thought about the added rc30 funtionality of this pedal, the main problem (for me)with the boss version of this pedal is that it only runs off batteries. Does the skull taps require power and if so can it be plugged into a standard 9v power source? Thanks!

Hello Nick. These are completely passive pedals.. so no battery. There is no LED though either. I believe the BOSS switches have an LED indicator.
