Pioneers Sonic Youth

Pioneers Sonic YouthThis morning has been odd in a fun way. I woke up and walked into my home office where my mp3 server has been continually spitting out random tunes. First tune I notice is by Sonic Youth. That gave me a smile, and I said to myself, this is a good Sonic Youth day. Usually step two of my day involves going to Facebook and wasting a bunch of time, and what do I see… a very cool short video about Sonic Youth titled ‘Pioneers Sonic Youth’.

How fitting a name – Pioneers. When I think of Sonic Youth, that is basically the only thing that comes to mind. Pioneers. Talk about a band from start to today have really been honest with themselves and to their fans… and to their music. I remember it took me a long time to warm up to Sonic Youth. The first album (or cassette) I got was Confusion is Sex probably in my sophomore year in high school. I remember I found it in the ‘import’ section of the music store in Great Falls, MT. I had no idea who they were, just wanted to pick something random. From there, various albums would come into my hands – Daydream Nation, Sister, Dirty, The Eternal, etc. All brilliant in their own way.. all unique in their own way.

Around 2009 I had a chance to see Sonic Youth for the first time (and in fact, I got to meet them.. but that’s another story), and I remember being in the audience absolutely amazed how they controlled ‘chaos’. They owned it. They managed it. They played with it. All the while that chaos was ambiance of a driving song. I was blown away. And it took my appreciation of the band to whole new level.
