Digitech iStomp

Digitech iStompI came across an interesting product today – the Digitech iStomp. This is definitely the future for a large segment of guitarists/bassists. It provides the ability to create digital effects from your iPhone/iPad/iPod but control the effect like a analog stomp by allowing for a floor controlled unit and the ability to have ‘knobs’ to dial in the effect. You can select from 20 different stomp boxes (I’m sure many more to come). If I understand this correctly, you can store the effects on your iDevice and push it to the pedal, but the pedal can only play one effect once it’s loaded. If anyone has any personal experience with this, please chime in and let me know what you think!

You can pick up a Digitech iStomp for $139.99 at Amazon.

Here is the official description of the Digitech iStomp:

iStomp works like all other stompboxes on the market Turn the iStomp into any pedal available in the Stomp Shop Stomp Shop offers more than 20 different pedals to choose from More pedals will be continually added to the Stomp Shop User defined custom LED color for any pedal loaded to the iStomp Die-cut removable custom labels for multiple pedals included True stereo in and stereo out Stomp Shop Apps saves all your pedals in the app Compatible with all models of iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad running iOS 4 or later.

I am very interested in learning more about this product and others like it. It looks like all of them are made for the Apple products now. I hope this will change since I lean toward the more open Android OS. I can’t wait for the hackers to get a hold of these units, allowing every day people to make and trade effects for free … or is that the plan? I was under the impression you could only buy the preset effects as microtransactions.

I think Alex is right. It will become an interesting product when hackers will chime in. I think it’s a great idea but conservatively exploited. The possibilities in terms of effects are infinite since it’s software based, but they chose to limit the range of effects to a handful of already existing pedals.

I have three kinds of effects on my pedalboard. The ones I can’t live without and that are gonna stay on my pedalboard for probably the next 10 years; the ones I use frequently but that, from times to times, I like to try other flavours (ie distortion and fuzz) and finally the ones that I need for only a couple of tunes, the ones that come and go. The iStomp would be perfect for this last category, taking less estate than a multi-effect pedal and sparing me the expense of buying several stompboxes. The only problem is that those are mostly oddball effects that are not currently available from the Digitech app.

I think the current effects are also too expensive at 10$ a piece.
