I’ve been a pretty big fan of Mogwai over the years. I have to say.. they’re pretty awesome and I always find myself spinning one of their discs. If you’re ever looking for some driving music.. this is it. For those that aren’t familiar with Mogwai, they’re a band from Scotland that is primarily instrumental. They rely on building tension and craft a pretty brilliant audio soundscape. There are tons of bands that want to be Mogwai today, but there can only be one.
I had the pleasure to see them live in Portland a few years ago, and it was one of the best shows I’ve seen. I would highly recommend checking out their shows.. or at least buy a disc or two.
I found this cool video shot by SVT and submitted by ccdavelee where Stuart does a walk through of Mogwai’s gear. For this particular post, I wanted to focus on John Cumming’s pedal board.
I took some video stills of his pedal boards (he has two). I have the majority figured out.. but there are some missing pieces there. If you know what’s missing.. or see anything incorrect, please comment below! Here is a shot of the primary pedal board. Looks to be distortion/EQ and HOG stuff.
Next is is his secondary board. I had a harder time identifying this board. Primarily delay board.

I see he uses EHX / Electro-Harmonix effects pedals. Surely the best value for money pedals around!

the 4-stomp pedal controls things on his laptop [he triggers the glitchy clicks on ‘2 Rights Make 1 Wrong’ when the drums cut out]. I don’t know what it’s called but it’s a midi thing.
I only know this because he held his laptop out to the audience a la the lion king when he did it.
also i’d guess based on the text looking like a block rather than slightly skewed that the reverb is an RV-5, not the RV-3.
